Glossary:

Phonics – About sounds and how they represented by letters to create words.

Phoneme – The smallest unit of sound in a word.

Grapheme – A letter or sequence of letters that represent a phoneme.

Digraph – Two letters representing one phoneme

Trigraph – Three letters representing one phoneme.

Split digraph – Two letters representing one phoneme but split within a word.

Adjacent consonants – Two or more consonants next to each other in a word.

Syllable – A beat in a word.

Monosyllabic – Having one syllable.

Polysyllabic – Having two or more syllables.

Segment – The ability to hear individual phonemes in a word.

Blend – The ability to merge individual phonemes together to pronounce a word.

CVC word – A word in which the sequence of phonemes is consonant – vowel – consonant.

CCVC word – A word in which the sequence of phonemes is consonant – consonant – vowel – consonant.
